My Big List Of Healthy Foods
Hi I’m Al and on this page you will find my big list of healthy foods. But before that the whole premise of this site is about keeping diet advice extremely simple so the following short list of healthy foods offers compact guidelines about what healthy foods to eat.
Humans should eat mostly fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and eggs.
What am I talking weird like that… like humans are animals or something? Well newsflash! Humans are animals and these are the foods that our bodies have been designed to eat. These foods are the foods that our ancestors ate for the last 2.5 million years until very recently.
For millions of years we didn’t eat sugar, we didn’t eat bread, we didn’t eat rice and we most certainly didn’t eat processed frozen ready meals. That all changed relatively recently when humans invented farming and grain crops started to dominate our diets and the change accelerated even more in the last 100 years with the mass production of processed food.
I believe that as adults we each need to take responsibility for our own health. In a way we are our own zookeepers, we are in charge of our personal well-being and sadly many are not making a very good job of it.
I am not a doctor and the information of this website does not constitute medical advice. My Big List Of Healthy Foods is simply a list of all the foods that I believe to be healthy based on my experience and research.
I aim to eat from this list of healthy foods 80% of the time and 20% of the time I go off the list for treats and less healthy indulgences. It’s not too hard to stick to this method of eating and I find it works very well for me. I have lost a lot of weight and become a much healthier and happier person. I strongly encourage you to give it a try and see the effects for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is x food not on the list?
A. This is my personal list of healthy foods. It is not exhaustive and there are other healthy foods that are not included. If it’s a grain it’s not included because I don’t believe that our bodies are designed to eat grains and so I don’t consider grains to be healthy. I eat grains regularly, but I include them as part of my 20% allowance for not healthy foods.
Q. Why is dark chocolate included?
A. Dark chocolate is included on grounds for my own mental health. It has been found to be high in antioxidants and if you buy dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, 70% or more, the sugar content is not too high.
Q. How is the star rating calculated?
A. In recent years the term ‘superfood’ has become more and more popular. All the foods on this list are healthy to eat and with the exception of cheese, red wine and dark chocolate you should eat as much of them as you like. Some foods however have gained a reputation to have greater health benefits than others. The science is always confusing and often contradictory. Where I have frequently encountered claims of health benefits for a food I have scored it higher.
Q. Why are some foods healthy and not others?
A. The main enemy of health in the human body is inflammation and many of the diseases we encounter are forms of inflammation. Inflammation is the bodies natural response to tissue damage. When we eat foods that our bodies are not designed to eat we cause damage to our bodies and inflammation results. If you eat from the list of healthy foods 80% of the time you will reduce the damage to your body, give it time to heal and more general healthiness will result.
Q. You seriously expect me to eat only from this list?
A. No. This is a list my favorite healthy foods. I try to make my diet consist of 80% foods from this list the other 20% of my food comes from foods not on this list.
Q. Can I eat my 20% not healthy foods on the same plate as my healthy foods?
A. That’s exactly what I do.
Q. How do you define the 80% 20% by weight, volume or calories?
A. I do it very roughly by calories. Some foods, particularly unhealthy foods, can not look like a lot on the plate but contain a lot of calories. Make 80% of you calories come from healthy foods and 20% of your calories from anywhere else.
